true, IE<9 has no SVG support at all, the even the slightly more advanced stuff goes downhill quickly in other browsers & versions (http://caniuse.com/#search=svg), which sucks…

falling back to PNGs or Flash are the more common options, but here are a couple other options that i have heard about, but not yet tried (they come with some big names attached, though):

• https://github.com/Modernizr/Modernizr/wiki/HTML5-Cross-browser-Polyfills#svg
