Out of curiosity, what is stopping you from having your theme directly pull from GitHub? I know that WooCommerce can pull updates for their products, so it can be done.

Actually, wouldn’t that make a great new plugin? Use a common tag in plugins just like WordPress already uses, and just poll GitHub or even BitBucket or others instead?
